The American Royal: An Annual Tradition
For those looking for an event that offers a taste of everything, the American Royal is a famous Kansas City icon that provides more than two and a half months of excitement. The American Royal has a history of more than 110 years. What first started as a cattle show in 1899 at the Kansas City Stockyards has now expanded to include over 40 fun-packed activities that span a period of more than two months.
The American Royal will be held this year from Sept. 5-Nov. 15, 2013. From debutante balls to barrel racing, there are numerous options to enjoy, no matter what type of activity you prefer. Held at the Kemper Arena, some of the American Royal’s main events include livestock shows, horse shows and a professional rodeo with large prize packages.
The horse shows have expanded to include five areas of competition: Arabian, Cutting, Hunter/Jumper, Quarter Horse and Saddle Horse. From the educational Cutting events that show how horses are still used today by working ranchers, to the refined Arabian horses decked out in beautiful finery, these horse shows provide multiple opportunities for both viewers and participants to get the most excitement from their day.
If you are hoping for activities besides horse events and rodeos, there is no need to worry. With over 500 teams competing, the World Series of Barbecue located in the West Bottoms brings in approx. 70,000 visitors who can eat to their heart’s content for three fun-filled days.
Grounds admission includes live music, a fireworks show, cooking demos, a petting zoo for the kids to enjoy, shopping opportunities and much more! With events like the Fast Eddy’s Texas Hold ‘Em Tournament and the Oklahoma Joe’s Open Contest Awards Ceremony, it’s easy to see why visitors flock to the American Royal. So plan your trip to include some time during these fun-filled two and a half months and see for yourself why this spectacular event has become so famous.
