MLK Jr. Celebrations

Looking for ways to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day in KCMO? The 34th Annual Northland MLK Jr. celebration takes place at Gano Chapel, located at the William Jewell College in nearby Liberty. It’s one of the biggest gatherings in the area. There’s also the annual MLK Celebration on the Kansas side of KC, which starts at 11 a.m. at the Jack Reardon Convention Center.

Head to the Concrete Action for Economic and Social Justice at the Friendship Baptist Church at 3:30 p.m. for a special keynote speech. The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum offers a yearly celebration starting at 5:30 p.m., late enough that you can make morning plans, too. It features special art exhibits, an awards celebration and much more.

The Life and Works of Dr. King

The Friendship Baptist Church also is hosting their King Holiday Mass Celebration with special speakers, and the 14th Annual MLK Jr. Legacy and Scholarship Awards Dinner takes place at Overland Park. The fundraiser is $75 per person to attend and helps fund scholarships for new year’s awardees.

Join the local chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity for a breakfast with tributes to Dr. King. The annual fundraiser is held at Harris-Stowe State University at 7:30 a.m., making it the perfect pick to start your holiday on the right note.

With so many ways to celebrate, make this a weekend of service.
