Kansas City Repertory Theatre
The performing arts center at 4949 Cherry St. hosts some of the best performances in KCMO in an intimate environment. The official theatre in residence at the University of Missouri-Kansas City has been a landmark in the area for over 50 years. Founded by Dr. Patricia McIlrath in 1964, she was committed to creating a training program for theatre students where they could work alongside actors, directors and designers. It quickly became associated with the Actors’ Equity Association and has continued to flourish since its founding.
With administrators and directors like James Costin and George Keathley playing vital roles in the theatre’s growth, the theatre has undergone incredible transformations. For years, the theatre’s leaders wanted to create a smaller, second theatre. That came to fruition in 2007 when the Copaken Stage opened its doors. Located in downtown, the theatres now offer even more performances as well as some of the most beautiful venues in KCMO.
Stagebound
In 2014, a multimillion-dollar campaign allowed for renovation of the main stage. The first renovation in decades, it revitalized the artistic community and ushered in a new era of entertainment. Evita, A Christmas Carol, and Constellations are just a few of the performances that have wowed crowds in the past year. If you’re looking for a special night out, an evening at the theatre is an experience you’ll never forget.
