International Cuisine: North America

Eat your way around the world, one continent at a time!

International Cuisine: North America

United States: Jack Stack Barbecue

Enjoy good old Kansas City barbecue at Jack Stack.  You’ll obviously want to order burnt ends, but don’t miss out on the barbecue shrimp!  For a unique dish, try the salmon covered in a blackberry barbecue sauce.

Mexico: Ixtapa

Ixtapa is a great choice for Mexican food.  Their chiles rellenos are overflowing with cheese, and the enmoladas entree is essentially a Mexican cactus casserole, with all of the comforting warmth you’d expect.

Cuban: Empanada Madness

Enjoy a Cuban sandwich at this Latin American joint.  The ham and pork is cooked perfectly, and a side of plantains brings a bit of lighter tropical flavor.

El Salvador: El Pulgarcito

Get an assortment of pupusas to really delve into El Salvadorian cuisine.  They have over 15 different varieties so you can get different types every time you visit.  Pair it with horchata de morro, a creamy beverage made from morro seeds.

Haiti: Mesob

Try braised oxtail or curry shrimp at this Haitian/Caribbean restaurant.  Everything is cooked according to traditional Caribbean recipes, bringing a new palette of flavors to you for your enjoyment.

Jamaica: Sankofa Cafe

Curry goat is a classic Jamaican dish, and you can try it at Sankofa.  Pair it with okra and fried plantains to balance the spice.

Honduras: Delicias de Honduras

Enjoy some Hondurian staples at this small cafe, where everything is made fresh.  Be prepared for some spice – a lot of the dishes are pretty hot, but it’s well worth it, especially when you sop up sauce with flatbread.

Enjoy trying new foods by eating these restaurants while you’re in Kansas City!
