Heart of America Shakespeare Festival

Until July 5, you can check out the incredible Shakespeare Festival at Southmoreland Park. With this years’ King Lear production starring John Rensenhouse held Tuesday-Sunday evenings in early summer, it’s an outdoor extravaganza suitable for the entire family. The gates open at 6pm with the show starting at 8pm. It’s the second year of what’s quickly become a favorite local festival, and it’s the first time this Shakespearean tragedy has been produced by the organizers in 16 years.

You’ll also want to check out the Tuesday-Sunday production of Twelfth Night, available through July 3. The romantic comedy is a perfect pick for date night, exploring reunion and love and loss, along with some fantastic gender reversal. Admission is based on donation only, but reserved seats and blankets are available to purchase in advance or at the gate.

A Night to Remember

With over 30 productions since its inception, the Shakespeare Festival has consistently brought top performances to the KCMO area with each performance catering to theater lovers of all ages. The park-based festival is a great excuse to pack a picnic and enjoy the incredible summer evening weather. Swing by a food truck or local restaurant to combine a foodie experience with leading theater.
