Dance Theatre of Harlem

Mark your calendar for February 9th when Dance Theatre of Harlem arrives in KCMO for a one-time event. The Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, located at 1601 Broadway Boulevard, hosts the special event at 7:30 p.m. Harlem has long been considered one of the premium cultural centers in the country, and the dance theatre embodies the Harlem spirit completely.

The theatre was created shortly after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination as a way to inspire children to dance. Since then, it has turned into one of the most impressive institutions in the country. “Inspired by a dream,” the theatre is committed to sustaining a world-class training school for young dancers, classical ballet, an arts education, and maintaining a reputation as the superior ballet company for African Americans.

A Dance to Remember

The Kauffman Center is KCMO’s leading venue for diverse, eclectic and world-class performances. You can purchase general tickets, discount tickets and gift certificates online. The dining experience at the center is also phenomenal and the perfect pre-cursor to the performance. On the small plates menu, try baked brie en croute, house-cured Scottish salmon or the chef’s selection of seasonal desserts.

Moshe Safdie designed the center, which features 285,000 square feet and two main performance halls. The exterior is comprised of pre-cast concrete, glass and bead-blasted stainless steel. Twenty-seven cables hold up the walls and lobby glass. Brandmeyer Great Hall is a massive glass-enclosed area with a refreshment bar, gift shop, box office and coat check.
