Coming Up: Amelia Earhart Festival
Celebrate the life and accomplishments of renowned female pioneer, Amelia Earhart!
Just an hour outside of Kansas City, Atchison is the birthplace of Amelia Earhart and celebrates her legacy every year with the Amelia Earhart Festival! It’s three days of fun, food, and live music that you won’t want to miss.
Thursday
The celebration starts with ice cream sundaes at St Mark’s Lutheran Church in honor of Amelia Earhart’s grandfather, who used to attend services here. You can spend the rest of the day enjoying the carnival, complete with rides, games, and carnival food – find out just how many things can be deep-fried!
Friday
The festival kicks off at the library, with a discussion of historian Ann Birney’s portrayal of Amelia Earhart. Watch her perform and learn about Amelia Earhart as though she’s in the room with you. Afterwards, enjoy the outdoor concert at Warnock Lake, with headliner Kip Moore (“Something ‘Bout A Truck” and “Beer Money”), as well as Devin Dawson (“Asking For A Friend”) and Kylie Morgan (“Cuss Just A Little”).

Day 2 kicks off early with the 2k/8k run, after which you can visit Muriel and see a plane like the one Earhart was flying when she mysteriously disappeared. You can also tour the Amelia Earhart Birthplace Museum and see the house where she was born, while imagining what she must have been like as a child.
Other available activities include educational and fun children’s activity booths at Commercial Street Mall – including birthday cake – and local music artists performing live at Riverfront Park. At 8 PM, see an aerobatics show featuring two pilots doing stunts in the aircraft – their manuevers are intimidating and impressive! Afterwards, enjoy the annual fireworks show with live music at the riverbank.
