Celebrate Solstice with a Hike

Summer is officially arriving, and what better way to celebrate the longest day of the year than with a gorgeous hike? KCMO is spilling over with day-hike options, and you don’t have to go far from your hotel to take advantage of the trails! Consider Loose Park Trails at 51st and Main, which is dog-friendly and offers a generous 75-acre park with two short trails, both under two miles. There are also tennis courts, historical buildings, a rose garden and lake.

At Wyandotte County Park Trails, located at 126th and State Avenue in Bonner Springs, you’ll find a minimum 8.9 mile loop perfect for hikers and trail runners. This park has 1,500 acres with a number of smaller trails within. Some trails have large hills, rocky terrain and might even require you to cross water, so you’ll also see horseback riders along the path.

Take a Hike!

At Blue River Parkway Trail, a 12 mile (or more!) option is ideal for trail runners, those on horseback and mountain bikers. You’ll find it at the Blue River, south of the city, and it’s famous for those who want a challenge. Trails hug both sides of the river, and some parts can get seriously rocky and hilly.

Prefer something family-friendly and more relaxed? Indian Creek Bike Trail at Overland Park offers 17 miles of asphalt trails. It’s dog friendly and brings together Tomahawk Creek Trail with Leawood City Park. Playgrounds galore are here!
