MLK Jr. Celebrations

Celebrate the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at the annual American Jazz Museum Festival. On January 16th, a musical, poetic and dance-fueled celebration takes place throughout the day to uplift the community and promote togetherness. The event is free and open to the public, although regular museum admission does apply.

The annual Alpha Phi Alpha Holiday Breakfast takes place at 7:30 a.m. at the Beta Lambda Educational Institute. Free and open to the public, keynote speakers and musical tributes are the highlights. The Jack Reardon Civic Center also hosts keynote speakers punctuated with performances and the annual scholarship awards.

Finding Your Dream

Annually, the Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church hosts an event to minimize poverty and increase social justice. Lee’s Summit’s annual celebration kicks off with pre-shows at 5:30 p.m. The ninth annual Martin Luther King Jr. lecture at the UMKC Pierson Auditorium always draws a crowd with black studies professors and keynote speakers as a big draw for this free event.

No matter how you chose to celebrate, make this a day of remembrance, paying tribute, and reflecting on what Dr. King’s work means for you. There are events throughout the month of January, so make your stay in KCMO count.
