When you hear the term Cinco de Mayo, you may think it’s a day to celebrate Mexico’s independence. But, May 5 actually marks the annual celebration of the Mexican victory at the Battle of Pueblo in 1862. Whether you plan to celebrate at a parade or with a feast at a local Mexican restaurant, the city of Kansas City will not disappoint you. Cinco De Mayo Parade and Fiesta
Celebrate this May at the Cinco De Mayo Parade and Fiesta in Emerson Park on May 5 and May 6. This annual parade is sponsored by Aztec de Greater KC. Bring the whole family to these family friendly festivities where you’ll find free events that celebrate the Latino cultures and traditions.
Margarita’s
On Saturday May 5, Margarita’s locations in Kansas City will hold their 27th Cinco de Mayo celebration. Bring the family or come with friends for the huge party where you’ll find awesome food and drink specials at all four locations. The locations include downtown Kansas City, north in Gladstone, Lenexa and Liberty.
Cinco de Mayo at Westport
On May 2, the Westport Library will hold its annual Cinco de Mayo celebration. This family friendly event begins at 4pm and includes a variety of festivities. Kids can make authentic Mexican crafts like maracas, paper flowers and more. There will be a donkey piñata and storytelling in English and Spanish. Chips, salsa and refreshments will be available.
Costumed Dog Parade
If you’re looking for a little off beat entertainment in Kansas City, why not come out and see the Cinco de Mayo parade that will feature over 700 costumed dogs, mainly Chihuahuas, marching down the city street. The parade begins at 11am and there is a five dollar entry fee for canine participants. Proceeds will benefit The Pet Connection shelter.
Run NKC Schools 5k
If you’re looking for a healthy way to celebrate Cinco de Mayo in Kansas City, you can celebrate with a 5k run. The run takes place on May 5 at the District Activities Complex at 9am. All proceeds for this event benefits the North Kansas City Schools Education Foundation and PTA at the district schools. Check out the district website for registration information.
